Assembling Wonder

In this session, these three practitioners explore how creative rituals can offer space for grief, healing and communal renewal.

Day Schildkret discusses his Morning Altars practice—how assembling found elements daily fosters ritual, belonging and tenderness toward what’s passing. Sarah Gillespie reflects on the power of slow, attentive printmaking to hold stillness and remembrance in the face of ecological disappearance. Angel Chen shares how environmental installation, rooted in permaculture and landscape immersion, can hold grief in beauty and material form.

Day Schildkret is an internationally acclaimed earth artist and founder of Morning Altars. He transforms grief into beauty through impermanent mandalas made of found natural materials—feathers, leaves, stones and berries—offering a simple yet powerful daily ritual to mourn and remember.

Sarah Gillespie is a Royal West of England Academician and printmaker whose mezzotints—especially of moths—are meditative acts of paying attention and presence. Her work uses traditional techniques to summon both visibility and disappearance, and to honour the fragility of more-than-human lives.

Angel Chen is a visual artist with a permaculture-informed practice based in Joshua Tree. She creates immersive object- and environment-based work that engages ecological systems, the sublime and grief, seeking to blend art and environmental consciousness.
